For more than 30 years, Big Brothers Big Sisters Long Island (BBBSLI) has helped local children reach their full potential. Through contributions of time, money and clothing, Long Islanders have positively impacted the lives of local children facing adversity.
If you would like to join this worthy cause, there are three simple ways to help BBBSLI.
How to Help Big Brothers Big Sisters Long Island
1) Donation Center
The Big Brothers Big Sisters Long Island Donation Center increases our ability to help children and families throughout the area.
Six days a week, our fleet of trucks picks up gently used items from Long Islanders’ doorsteps. Through a partnership with SAVERS Thrift Stores, these public donations fund our mission to provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported one-to-one relationships.
How you can help
You can drop off donations at any of our bin locations across Long Island. If a pick up is easier, you can complete our online form or call (631)234-0000.
We also send direct mail and call residents with listed phone numbers in advance of town-wide pickups.
We gladly accept these and other items:
- Clothing
- Shoes
- Coats
- Small household items
We cannot accept:
- Car seats
- Mattresses or box springs
- Large appliances
- Food
All net proceeds are used to support BBBSLI.
2) Monetary Donations
Your monetary donations help fund our programs which create meaningful matches between children (‘Littles’) and volunteer mentors (‘Bigs’) right here on Long Island. Our staff of professional case managers provide ongoing support for the lifetime of the match to ensure it provides a successful and beneficial outcome for the child.
In addition, we provide resources to the parents and guardians of all the Littles in our program, award an annual scholarship and host events for ‘Bigs’, ‘Littles’ and their families all year-round.
3) Become a Big
Becoming a ‘Big’ is another way to make a significant difference in the life of a child.
A ‘Big’ is a volunteer mentor who is matched in a one-to-one relationship with a local child in the BBBSLI program. They act as a friend, supporter of their little brother or sister, sharing a different perspective on life to help the ‘Little’ realize their endless potential.
The Big Brother Big Sisters Long Island staff provides training and support services for the duration of the match. You can fill out this online form to learn more about becoming a ‘Big.’
