Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Long Island makes a huge impact on the lives of those in our youth mentoring program. However, the benefits our volunteers receive in return can be equally profound.
The Satisfaction of Creating Positive Change
Joining a youth mentoring program is unique, because you get to witness your impact on the life a child. “When I first met Marven two years ago he was very quiet and shy and now he has become more vocal and his confidence has definitely improved,” said John, a BBBSLI mentor.
As you witness your mentee change and grow, it may bring more satisfaction than you might imagine.
“Over the years I’ve always tried to instill the importance of education and how it is something that should be appreciated and taken seriously. Justin is now very focused on attending college and that is something that makes me proud,” Bob, another local mentor, shared.
‘Littles’ Help ‘Bigs’ Grow, too
There’s no doubt that volunteering with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Long Island is a great way to give back to those in need of a positive influence in their lives. But, there is also no denying the benefits of being Big Brother or Big Sister receives in return.
It can improve your whole outlook on life. Many participants report benefits like these:
- An increased feeling of gratitude
- A change in perspective
- Improved self-image
- More self-respect
- A sense of fulfillment
You Gain a New Friend
As they attend activities and events together, ‘Bigs’ and ‘Littles’ frequently become fast friends.
“I really look forward to all the different things Marven and I will now have the ability to do. Marven and I have a shared interest in football and that is something we bond over. Now that we are a Community Based match I can help him practice and go to his games which is something both of us have wanted to be able to do,” said Big Brother John.
These relationships, which began in BBBSLI, sometimes extend into more personal territory.
For example, when Big Sister Christine got married, her Little Sister, Angelica, was by her side as a bridesmaid. “My relationship with Angelica has become such an important and meaningful part of my life which is why I asked her to be a bridesmaid in my wedding. It was special for me to have the close people in my life who have heard about Angelica for years finally get to meet her,” explained Christine.

Youth Mentoring makes you Feel Young Again
There’s something special about spending time with adolescents. They are full of enthusiasm as they pursue a wide range of interests and activities. Our ‘Bigs’ quickly become well-versed in the latest music, trends or fashion. By donating a few hours a week, many Big Brothers or Big Sisters report feeling infinitely younger.
By becoming a Big Brother or Big Sister, you could change not only the direction of a young life but also alter the course of your own.
