What is BBBSLI?
BBBSLI is a one-to-one mentoring program that pairs awesome adult volunteers (Bigs) with kids (Littles) who could use a positive role model.
Think of it like being the mentor you wish you had—a trusted, supportive friend who shows up, listens, and helps a young person reach their potential. Whether it’s shooting hoops, grabbing a bite, playing video games, or just hanging out, you can make a huge impact—without overhauling your schedule.
Why Be a Big? What Makes BBBSLI Different?
We know you’ve got choices, so here’s why BBBSLI is THE mentoring program to join:
Built-in Support – You’re never alone in this! Our Match Support Team is here to offer ideas, guidance, and troubleshooting when you need it.
A Match That Actually Fits – We take time to pair you with a Little based on personality, interests, and location. Love sports? Cool—we’ll match you with a Little who loves them too. More into books and gaming? We got you.
Training & Resources – No experience? No problem! We provide training, activity ideas, and ongoing support to help you be a great mentor.
Flexibility – This is NOT a full-time gig. Just 2-4 hours a month, scheduled around your life.
Bottom line? You bring your time and heart—we’ll take care of the rest.
Who Can Apply? Can I Be a Big?
If you’re:
18 or older
Living or working in Nassau or Suffolk County
Able to commit to one year of mentoring
A decent human with a clean background check
Have regular access to a vehicle
Have a valid driver license and auto insurance
Then YES, you can absolutely be a Big! You don’t need to be perfect—just a friendly, consistent presence in a Little’s life.
How Do I Sign Up?
Super simple. Here’s what you need to do:
1. Apply online – Takes just a few minutes!
2. Chat with us – We’ll do a quick interview to get to know you.
3. Get trained & screened – We’ll handle the background check and prep you for success.
4. Meet your Little! – We’ll introduce you to a mentee who’s excited to meet their new Big.

What If I’m Nervous or Don’t Click With My Little?
Totally normal! New relationships take time. If things feel awkward at first, that’s okay.
Good news? We have a Match Support Team that’s got your back with icebreakers, activity ideas, and tips to help you connect. If it’s really not working out, we’ll work with you to find a solution. No stress, no guilt-just support.
What Do Bigs Actually Do?
Being a Big isn’t about spending money-it’s about showing up. You’re there to encourage, have fun, and be a trusted friend. Just 2-4 hours a month! That’s one or two meetups per month—whether it’s hitting the arcade, grabbing ice cream, or shooting some hoops.
It’s low-key, meaningful, and FUN.
Here are some things you can do with your Little:
• Bowling battles (who’s got the best strike?)
• Pizza runs & ice cream trips (obviously)
• Gaming showdowns (Mario Kart, anyone?)
• Sports & outdoor fun
• Arts, crafts & creativity
• Homework help or college prep convos
How Much Will I Spend?
It’s About Time—Not Money
At Big Brothers Big Sisters of Long Island, we believe the quality of your time matters more than how much you spend. What truly makes a difference in a child’s life is showing up—consistently, genuinely, and with intention.
That’s why we encourage low-cost or no-cost outings, especially at the start of your match. Whether you’re shooting hoops at a local park, playing your favorite board game, or grabbing a slice of pizza, it’s the shared moments that build trust and create lasting impact. You don’t need a big budget to be a Big—you just need a big heart.
We also offer donor-supported events and free tickets to sports games, cultural events, and other fun experiences so you and your Little can explore new things together. Plus, you’ll have the chance to meet other Bigs and Littles through our group activities—a great way to stay connected and inspired.
When you become a Big, you’re not just making memories—you’re helping unlock potential, one moment at a time.
What Kind of Support Will I Get?
Once you’re matched with your Little, you’ll be paired with a dedicated Match Support Specialist—your personal go-to for guidance, encouragement, and resources throughout your mentoring journey.
Whether you’re navigating a challenge, looking for activity ideas, or simply want to check in, your Match Support Specialist is just a call, text, or email away. They’ll provide regular support, offer helpful feedback, and celebrate the positive impact you’re making. Think of them as your partner in helping your Little thrive—and your support system every step of the way.

FREE match events & activities – Think: bowling nights, trips, and more!
Ongoing guidance – If you ever have a question, we’re just a call away.

How long does it take to be matched?
What BBBSLI does better than any other mentoring organization is the extensive vetting process and the attention that goes into matching the right child with the right volunteer. We conduct a lengthy interview process to find a strong and safe match for each child based on where they live, personality, interests and background so the process can take anywhere from a few months to more than a year. The amount of time it takes to be matched can vary depending on who and where the kids on our waiting list are.
What If I Need to End My Match?
We get it—life happens. If you need to step away, just keep us in the loop so we can help transition your Little and make sure they stay supported. We would like to have a meeting with all parties to say goodbye and reflect on the time you spent with your mentee.
No guilt, no drama—just honest communication.
