Parents

Looking out for your children is a full time job. The goal of every parent is to protect their children and hope that they know how to protect themselves when they are on their own.

Nowadays, with the Internet and cell phones, we have to take even more safety precautions. Many children know more about modern technology than adults do.

Our workshop can help to bridge the generation gap that is plaguing many families. Become aware of not only the dangers that are out there, but what you can do to prevent and deal with them.

Let the facts speak for themselves. . .

  • Approximately 100 children are abducted and murdered each year.
  • There are 4,600 abductions by non-family members reported to law enforcement each
  • year.

PARENT WORKSHOP
Abduction and Internet Safety

This workshop is appropriate for parents/guardians and educators, who want critical information on the safety issues facing children today.

The focus on child abduction is critical because statistics have shown:

  • Children, ages 11-15, are at the greatest risk of being abducted.
  • There are 114,600 attempted abductions of children by non-family members each
  • year.

As children become more independent in their world, parents need to become familiar with lures that are used by predators. These lures, that even adults may not be aware of, are reviewed in this workshop, such as:

  • Authority figures
  • Request for assistance
  • Bribery
  • Emergencies
  • Employment

Additional issues addressed include the “Parent’s Guide to Safety on the Internet Highway” highlighting:

  • Cyberbullying
  • The potential dangers of cell phones and webcams
  • What every adult can do to make the Internet safer for children by using filtering software, reporting issues to authorities and contacting resources
  • MySpace.com and similar websites- how to protect your child
  • National Juvenile Online Victimization Survey
  • LEETSPEAK- online language commonly used by teens where numbers and symbols replace letters of the
  • alphabet.
  • Netiquette
  • Bullycide

P2P Pressure (Drugs and Alcohol)

Appropriate for parents, guardians and educators, this 60-90 minute presentation deals with the critically important issues around peer pressure and its’ influence on the decisions children make with respect to drug and alcohol use. Many adolescents are engaging in behaviors that put their health and safety at risk and it is important that we recognize and address the issues before a tragedy occurs.
  • 33% of fourth graders report pressure to try drugs or alcohol
  • Less than half of internet abuses are reported by children to their parents
  • Teenage girls tend to be more pressured than boys

Topics included in this presentation are:
  • Signs that your child is being bullied or pressured to participate in illegal/unhealthy activities
  • How to help your child stand up to peer pressure
  • Over-the-counter drugs and prescriptions and the role they play as “gateway drugs”
  • Steps to take to keep the lines of communication open between you and your child.
  • Steps to take if you find out that your child has become involved in drugs and/or alcohol
  • The role technology plays in peer pressure and bullying activities
