On May 18, 2017, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Long Island (BBBSLI) hosted their annual Fashion Show, presented by Steve Madden. Nearly 200 people gathered at The Inn at New Hyde Park to watch BBBSLI Big & Little matches light up the runway modeling a range of looks from “thrift store chic” to formal wear.
Donna Drake, award winning media personality and host of Live It Up with Donna Drake served as the event’s guest emcee. Ten Big & Little matches modeled collections from Savers, Lexi Rose, Montauk Tackle and Lord & Taylor. Clothing was complimented by jewelry and accessories donated by Fortunoff Fine Jewelry. BBBSLI staff members also participated in the show modeling a collection of clothing and accessories from Popi’s Place.
The BBBSLI Fashion Show offered attendees the opportunity to witness the fun and dynamic closeness shared between Bigs & Littles! The event also highlighted the positive impact the Bigs have had on their Littles’ increased confidence and self-esteem. Throughout the show, matches found creative ways to incorporate their unique personalities into their runway performances. Observing the friendships and bonds shared between all the matches reinforced the impact and importance of the agency’s mentoring program.

On Tuesday, April 25th, Big Brothers Big Sister of Long Island (BBBSLI) celebrated their volunteer mentors (Bigs) at the annual Volunteer Appreciation Reception, presented by Darby Dental. Volunteers along with their family members, board members and supporters of BBBSLI gathered at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury, to celebrate our Bigs for the time and energy they spend positively impacting the lives of children on Long Island. This celebratory reception was held during National Volunteer Month.
“This is a special event for us. Our volunteers drive our agency- our mentors hold the power to change our community, one child at a time and to have an evening dedicated to all of our volunteers, mentors, Board Members, committee members and our President’s Council, is really important to our team”, said Nancy Travers, Director of Services for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Long Island.
The evening’s program recognized all of the Bigs for the many ways they give of themselves to positively impact the lives of their Littles. Also acknowledged were the 2017 scholarship award recipients. Scholarships are awarded to high school seniors pursuing higher education this fall, who have achieved academic excellence and demonstrate high levels of motivation, responsibility and resiliency in their everyday lives. These scholarship opportunities are generously made possible by Dorothy and John Talotta, Bikes for Kids in America, as well as the families of the late Jeff Grant, the late Glenn Trovato and the late Michael J. Weisbrod.
Thank you to Darby Dental for their sponsorship of this special event to honor our Bigs for all they do and to the staff at Crest Hollow Country Club for helping us provide our guests with an incredible evening.
Last but certainly not least, BBBSLI would like to express our deepest appreciation to all of our volunteer mentors. It is your commitment and dedication that makes it possible for our agency to make the positive impact we continue to have on the lives of young people across Long Island.
