Meet Little Brother Marven & Big Brother John

Marven and John have been matched since 2014 in our Site Based program at OpenLink. This summer they became the first match to make the transition from a Site Based match to a Community Based match. As a Site Based match they met bi-weekly at OpenLink’s offices as part of a group supervised by a BBBSLI case manager. As a Community Based match they will have the opportunity to continue their relationship, spending time together in various ways.

“Giving back to the community was something I really wanted to do and being matched with Marven in OpenLink’s Site Based mentoring program has been amazing,” said John.

He also said, “It feels great to be part of a milestone as the first match going from Site Based to the Community Based program and I hope we are a catalyst for others who want to make that transition”.

Marven shared, “My Big Brother John is the best Big Brother! He makes me feel very cared about and he is always so kind to me. At the start of the Big Brothers Big Sisters program at OpenLink I was really nervous to meet and spend time with someone I had never met before. But I knew I had to give it a shot and as time went on I got to know him better. Now I feel so comfortable with John and view him as someone who will always look out for me”.

“When I first met Marven two years ago he was very quiet and shy and now he has become more vocal and his confidence has definitely improved,” said John.

Both Marven and John are thrilled about continuing as a Community Based match and are excited about the new ways they can spend time together.

“I really look forward to all the different things Marven and I will now have the ability to do. Marven and I have a shared interest in football and that is something we bond over.  Now that we are a Community Based match I can help him practice and go to his games which is something both of us have wanted to be able to do,” said John.

Marven exclaimed, “I felt really happy when I found out that John and I would be continuing our match in the Community Based program. I am so excited about all the fun stuff we will be able to do now and I know we are going to have the best time together!  I love him very much and feel so thankful he is my Big Brother”.

Meet Little Sister Angelica & Big Sister Chris

Angelica Gomez & Chris Vint Collage

Angelica and Christine have been matched since 2013. “Chris is always there for me. Girls my age talk about how they will be friends forever, but the truth is those friendships will probably disappear in a few years, it means so much to me to know that my friendship with Chris is one that will actually last a lifetime,” said Angelica.

Christine has helped Angelica become less shy and more comfortable in being unique. Christine shared, “When I was a child I was very shy, quiet and insecure. My mother got me involved in organizations where mentors helped me realize it was okay not being exactly like everyone else. This is something Angelica and I have talked a lot about and now I see a confidence in her that did not exist two years ago when we first met.”

“It’s great to have a best friend that has so much life experience to share with me. Chris really helps me understand things better from an adult’s perspective and that makes things easier for me at home with my parents,” said Angelica.

This past summer when Christine got married, Angelica was by her side as a bridesmaid. Christine explained, “My relationship with Angelica has become such an important and meaningful part of my life which is why I asked her to be a bridesmaid in my wedding. It was special for me to have the close people in my life who have heard about Angelica for years finally get to meet her”.

“When Chris asked me to be her bridesmaid it was such an exciting moment. It made me feel so special that she wanted me to be recognized as an important person who will be in her life forever,” expressed Angelica.

Christine is passionate about the importance of mentoring. She is thankful for the positive life changing experience becoming a Big Sister has had on her life. To express her gratitude and support of our mission, she gratuitously asked wedding guests to make a donation to BBBSLI in lieu of a gift.

Angelica shared, “I feel inspired by Chris’s generosity. She wanted to become a Big Sister to help someone she didn’t even know. She dedicates time to me and also spends time volunteering at the animal shelter. I am so thankful to Chris because it used to bother me how I always felt a little different from other kids my age, which made me very shy. Chris taught me to embrace the things that make me different from everyone else which has helped me feel more comfortable to finally be my true self.”

Meet Little Justin & Big Bob

Justin and Bob have been matched since 2006. “When Bob came in to my life it meant everything. He gave me what I didn’t have. Without Bob in my life I would not be the person I am today,” said Justin.

Bob has been by Justin’s side to watch him mature into a confident and responsible young man. “I am so impressed with Justin’s sense of responsibility and how his confidence has developed over the years,” said Bob. Justin shared, “Without Bob in my life I would not be the person I am today. He has helped me progress into a more confident and outgoing person.”

Bob has instilled many life lessons in Justin that have had a positive influence on his life. Justin said, “One of the most valuable lessons Bob has taught me is to always keep my head up. He has made me realize that everything will be alright … no matter what. Bob has instilled in me the importance of listening and showing interest in other people. This has helped me so much in becoming who I am today.”

Bob has also helped Justin focus on his future. “Over the years I’ve always tried to instill the importance of education and how it is something that should be appreciated and taken seriously. Justin is now very focused on attending college and that is something that makes me proud,” Bob shared.

Something that is extremely meaningful to Bob is that Justin recognizes him on Father’s Day. “It has meant so much to hear Justin express how much he truly appreciates the simple things like having me attend his sporting events,” said Bob.

Justin shared, “I am more open with Bob than I am with any other adult in my life. It’s great that we can just go out to lunch and I can talk to him about absolutely anything.  When I am older and settled, I hope to be a big brother myself one day. I definitely want to give back and help someone in the positive way Bob has helped me.”
